The Holy Spirit: Intercessor

"We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will." Romans 8:22-27

I remember when our daughter, Tricia, was three years old and she got a really bad case of the flu. She had a high fever that stayed at about 103 degrees for several days. She coughed and had a runny nose and her little body ached from head to toe. Beverly spent hours every day trying to bring her fever down and comfort her--offering her juice, giving out doses of Tylenol, spooning chicken soup into her mouth, and giving her cool baths. Nothing seemed to help.

Probably the hardest part of it was her sitting on our couch and crying and saying over and over, “I’m having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.” She knew she was miserable, but she didn’t know what she needed. She only knew she needed something and was wanting someone to figure out what she needed to feel better. Unfortunately, in this case, the flu just had to run its course.

When I think of the Holy Spirit being our Intercessor, I think of why we need an Intercessor. The Bible talks about all of creation groaning (Romans 8:22) and how we don’t know what to pray for. (Romans 8:26) I don’t know about you, but I can relate to that.

There have been so many times in my life that I have been in a situation that had so many facets that I literally felt confused and overwhelmed. I could hardly hold onto a thought long enough to finish that thought, and I felt like all my options had merit, but also some serious complications. I had no clue what was the best way to go to solve the problem. I didn’t know how to pray or what to ask for, and honestly there were times when I had little strength to pray except to send up a flash prayer, saying “HELP!”

While there were times when I didn’t know what to pray, there have also been times that I thought I knew EXACTLY what needed to happen in a given situation. So I would pray asking God to do what I thought He should do. Thankfully, I look back on those situations where he didn’t give me what I was asking for and realize that God in His wisdom chose to not answer those prayers in the way I wanted.

The term “Intercessor” means “pleading on behalf of another,” but it also has the aspect of “intervening.” (Romans 8:27) When I think about not knowing what to pray for or even misguidedly praying in a wrong way, it is encouraging to know that God in His wisdom has provided an Intercessor who will not only plead on my behalf but also will intervene for me. I can imagine Him literally stepping in and telling God what I really need and maybe rescuing me from myself! That is grace, isn’t it?

So talk to me. In what areas of your life are you struggling? As you walk through the tough times in your life, do you ever feel confused and not know what to pray? What are your thoughts about the Holy Spirit interceding for you—pleading on your behalf? Do you find that comforting and encouraging? Is it helpful to know that you have the Holy Spirit to intervene as well? Does this passage also raise your awareness of the need to pray according to God’s will? Does it give you new thoughts about God’s love for us and his compassion for our groanings?

Post a comment! I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I struggle with praying, praying for something for a long time and STILL, no answer. I start to feel nothingness creep in and wonder, what's the use, He's not answering anyway. I feel forgotten. I know mentally and spiritually He hasn't left me, but mentally, I feel forgotten. It's been hard feeling like I'm miles from Him lately.

  2. I remember having to pray for my ex husband...that was HARD!I didn't want to nor did I think he deserved prayer(in my mind). But I remember the first night God said..'DO IT'.I was crying and literally grinding my teeth but thankfully the Holy Spirit KNEW what I was praying even when the words didn't come out of my mouth that night. That to me is one of the coolest things about the H.S.When we do not have the words or have a hard time speaking those words HE KNOWS!And can present what we are wanting to say. =)

  3. There has also been some intersting discussion on prayer at our church as well. I read some of the comments and thought I would share some other postings. - Mike Littau

  5. This is for "Anonymous." It sounds like you are in a tough spot right now. I would love to be able to sit down and talk to you and be an encouragement to you if I can. Maybe we can explore some possible answers that are there.

  6. It's encouraging to know that God knows what I need even when I don't. It seems like more and more I find myself confused and not knowing what to ask for. God knew what we would need (an Intercessor) even before we were born!

  7. "A time for EVERYTHING"!

"This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it."

Waiting is hard. One of the hardest things as a human I have ever had to do. It seems to me sometimes that God never seems to want to answer me when I want it. Things don't move fast enough, people don't change fast enough and prayer isn't always answered when I think it should be. I have had to learn that sometimes the answer is simply "Wait." I am learning that the answer is always better in God's time than my own. And honestly, sometimes I have a really hard time with that. I have learned to accept it, but have not mastered liking it. I am not completely sure that I ever will. What I do know, is that your wait will be rewarded. And I don't necessarily mean with the answer you may think you want, but with something unfathomably bigger. So...sit back, relax, have faith that no matter what, "God is in control". Embrace your season!

    Ecclesiastes 3
    A Time for Everything
1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,

6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

9 What does the worker gain from his toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on men. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. 13 That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him.

15 Whatever is has already been,
    and what will be has been before;
and God will call the past to account. [a]

16 And I saw something else under the sun:
In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.

17 I thought in my heart,
    "God will bring to judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
    a time for every deed."

18 I also thought, "As for men, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19 Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath [b] ; man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal [c] goes down into the earth?"

22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?

  8. I recently was reminded of how the Holy Spirit works. I was given the task of coming up with a skit-type event to get our ladies to interact with each other on a one-on-one basis. I prayed about it, and the Holy Spirit gave me direction. However, at our Women's Ministry meeting, I discussed the direction that the Holy Spirit had given me, but I couldn't quite get it together. During our conversation, Beverly mentioned the word "skit", and it was downhill after that. I don't mean to say that Beverly's direction was wrong, it was more likely that I had chosen a different direction than was given to me by the Holy Spirit. Anyway, to make a long story somewhat short, I fussed and fumed and prayed and spent a lot of time trying to come up with 4 different skits. It was frustrating, and as time went by I was getting more and more frustrated because it was getting close to the overnighter and I was not ready. Needless to say that I spilled out my frustrations to Beverly and she reminded me that I needed to go back to what the Holy Spirit had instructed me to do, but I had become so involved with what I wanted to do that I forgot what He wanted me to do. Well Beverly reminded me and I was off on on the right direction.

Well, I finally came up with something and sent it to Bevely and Ruth for their OK, which I received. I then began finalizing it. My final product was very simple in its form, but God had something entirely different planned for it. The next step was to match the ladies up, at the direction of the Holy Spirit, and to apply a scenario for each duo. I prayed about it and the Holy Spirit once again gave me direction.

Well, I gotta tell you that the outcome was so totally different than what I thought. I was absolutely amazed. You see, I had given two or three Bible verses for each of the scenarios and was expecting very quick and to-the-point presentations. Boy, was I wrong.
These ladies are amazing. They went way beyond the basic instruction I gave them. God just opened up the entire event and blessed it abundantly. These ladies added more verses to their skits and even provided props. They spoke from their hearts, and I was blown away. I feel sorry for the ladies that were not able to go, because they missed out on something very special and very spiritual.

  9. Oops! I pushed the wrong button and posted my comment before I had a chance to make any changes. Oh well. Just have to say that the overnighter was totally God inspired and it was awesome.

    That's all!!!!
