The Holy Spirit resides in all of us who have received Christ as our Savior. But we still have our free will whether to behave in ways we are prompted by Him, that is to obey, or to choose to continue to be an instrument of wickedness and disobey. The Holy Spirit is our Guide and He will give us warning when we are headed into danger.
But you still have to choose. I love the way it is stated in The Message:
That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don't give it the time of day. Don't even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time—remember, you've been raised from the dead!—into God's way of doing things. Sin can't tell you how to live. After all, you're not living under that old tyranny any longer. You're living in the freedom of God. Romans 6:12-14
Are you "running errands for the devil" or are you on a mission of love for your Father? Each and every day we are all confronted with choices to do right (die to the flesh) or to do wrong and continue to be a slave to sin.
So think of it this way. When you choose wrongly, it is kind of the same thing as standing by your old dead fleshly self (that died with Christ) and shaking it and slapping it, saying "wake up!"
Do you really want it to wake up? I'm thinking no. Paul wrote that sin is no longer our master (v.14), but we have to choose to serve our new Master.
